Z_One Fund Closes €35M for AI Startups

Italy is adding another source of early-stage capital for young technology businesses, with an emphasis on AI applications and urban technologies.

What happened

Z_One Fund, managed by Eureka! Venture, announced a first close exceeding €35 million against a target fund size of €60 million.

The investor base includes CDP Venture Capital, Zest, Lazio Innova and other institutions. The strategy focuses on pre-seed and seed-stage companies, especially startups applying AI in established industries and developing urban technologies.

Initial investment tickets can reach €250,000, with selective follow-on investments up to €1 million. A first close means the fund has reached an initial fundraising milestone; the full €60 million target should not be treated as money already raised.

Why it matters

At the earliest stages, startups often need more than capital. Small initial cheques, accelerator support and access to customers can help companies refine products and establish commercial traction before larger rounds.

Z_One's structure suggests a portfolio approach based on many early experiments and selective additional backing for companies that demonstrate progress. Public and institutional participation also reflects continuing efforts to strengthen regional venture ecosystems.

The bigger picture

European AI investment is not only about very large frontier-model or infrastructure rounds. There is also a market for startups embedding AI in ordinary business processes and urban services. Funds of this size can support that layer of innovation, although outcomes will depend on sourcing quality, follow-on financing availability and whether local companies can scale beyond their home markets.
