What happened
Yara Growth Ventures invested in German agritech business Stenon as part of a second closing of its Series B. Stenon's FarmLab product combines sensors and software to produce field measurements of soil conditions, including plant-available nitrogen. The company previously announced an €18 million initial Series B close; Yara's additional investment amount has not been disclosed. By collecting measurements in fields rather than relying exclusively on periodic laboratory sampling, the platform is designed to support more responsive fertiliser management. The announcement confirms the strategic investment, but does not establish that FarmLab has been deployed across Yara's full customer network.
Why it matters
Nitrogen is essential to crop growth, yet excess fertiliser raises farm costs and can contribute to water pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. More frequent measurements could help farmers apply nutrients more precisely if the resulting data are sufficiently accurate and easy to use. A strategic investor with agricultural distribution relationships could also help Stenon reach more growers.
The bigger picture
Precision agriculture is becoming an infrastructure and data business as well as a machinery market. Sensors, software and input suppliers increasingly need to work together to produce measurable outcomes. For Stenon, the meaningful proof points will be field accuracy, farmer economics and the conversion of strategic interest into ongoing commercial distribution.
