WindBorne Raises $37M for AI Weather
WindBorne raised $37M to expand weather intelligence built from long-flying balloons and AI models.

Weather is becoming a data infrastructure market, not just a forecast on a phone screen.
What happened
WindBorne Systems raised a $37 million Series B co-led by Khosla Ventures and Galvanize, bringing total funding to more than $62 million.
The company uses long-duration weather balloons to collect atmospheric data, then applies AI models to improve weather intelligence. The idea is to combine proprietary real-world data with modern forecasting systems, especially in places where traditional weather observations are limited.
That gives WindBorne a different position from pure software weather startups. Its edge depends on collecting better data, not only building better models.
Why it matters
Weather prediction is becoming more valuable as climate volatility affects energy grids, agriculture, insurance, shipping, aviation and commodity markets. Better forecasts can help businesses plan around storms, heat, rainfall, wind and supply-chain disruption.
AI can improve forecasting, but AI models are only as good as the data they can learn from. WindBorne’s bet is that proprietary atmospheric data can become a defensible advantage.
The bigger picture
Climate adaptation is creating new markets for intelligence infrastructure. Companies do not only need cleaner energy; they also need better tools to understand physical risk.
WindBorne sits in that shift: a climate-tech company where the product is not a battery or turbine, but better knowledge of the atmosphere.
