Waymo prepares to go direct in Uber markets
Waymo’s reported plan to offer direct rides in Austin and Atlanta tests whether a robotaxi operator still needs Uber once its own service reaches scale.
Waymo appears to be preparing for a future in which Uber is one distribution channel rather than the gateway to its robotaxi service.
What happened
Waymo is reportedly exploring a route out of its current partnership structure with Uber in Austin and Atlanta. Uber confirmed that Waymo intends to begin offering rides through its own application in those markets from January 2028, alongside the existing Uber service.
The current agreement expires in May 2028. The companies have already ended their smaller partnership in Phoenix.
Under the partnership model, Uber provides customer demand, payments and parts of the fleet-operation layer, while Waymo supplies the autonomous-driving technology and vehicles.
Why it matters
Partnerships with ride-hailing platforms allow autonomous-vehicle companies to enter a market without building a complete consumer network from scratch. But once a service has enough vehicles and brand recognition, the economics change.
Selling rides directly allows Waymo to control pricing, customer data and the entire service experience. It also avoids sharing economics with an intermediary.
The bigger picture
The robotaxi market is evolving into a platform contest. Waymo may aim to become a direct mobility network, while Uber is building a marketplace that can connect several autonomy providers.
The key question is whether robotaxi companies ultimately resemble airlines that distribute through many channels, or consumer platforms that own the customer relationship themselves. Waymo’s next move in Austin and Atlanta could provide an early answer.
