Walmart launches gateway for AI shopping agents
Walmart's Agent Gateway will let approved AI agents search its inventory and transact under customer-defined controls.

What happened
Walmart introduced Agent Gateway, an MCP server designed to let approved AI agents search its online inventory and complete purchases for customers. The retailer also plans Agent Profiles that distinguish purchases made by an agent and let shoppers require approval for every transaction or set spending limits.
Why it matters
Agentic commerce depends on retailers giving software controlled access to product data, accounts and payments. Walmart is building that access directly while adding rules around permissions, privacy and returns. The approach could make AI-assisted shopping more practical without requiring customers to hand an agent unrestricted control of their account.
The bigger picture
Large retailers are taking different positions on automated shopping. Walmart's decision provides an important real-world test of whether consumers trust agents to transact for them and whether retailers can manage mistakes, fraud and data access. Adoption, transaction quality and the number of compatible agents will show whether the gateway becomes meaningful infrastructure.
