US Orders Civilian Agencies to Remove DeepSeek
The order covers DeepSeek products and third-party services built with its models, citing data-transfer and supply-chain security risks.

US civilian federal agencies have been ordered to remove DeepSeek products and third-party services built using its models from government IT systems.
What happened
The order also prevents agencies from acquiring new DeepSeek-based products. Officials cited risks involving sensitive-data transfer, intelligence gathering, malware and other security vulnerabilities. Several agencies and states had already introduced narrower restrictions.
Why it matters
The policy reaches beyond a single chatbot. Covering third-party services means government buyers must understand which underlying models are embedded inside their software supply chains.
The bigger picture
AI procurement is becoming part of national-security policy. Governments increasingly care about where models are developed, where data travels and who can influence the technology underneath widely used applications.
