US lawmakers target alleged hack-for-hire firms

US lawmakers asked the Commerce Department to blacklist three alleged hack-for-hire firms, potentially restricting their access to American technology.

US lawmakers target alleged hack-for-hire firms

Commercial hacking services are becoming a policy problem similar to commercial spyware: governments increasingly need tools that target the companies supplying the capability, not only individual attacks.

What happened

US lawmakers asked the Commerce Department to add BellTroX, CyberRoot and Sunkissed Organic Farms, formerly Appin Technology, to the Entity List, citing alleged longstanding hack-for-hire activity targeting US individuals and organisations. Some companies linked to earlier allegations have denied wrongdoing.

Why it matters

An Entity List designation can restrict access to US software, cloud infrastructure and other technologies. That gives policymakers a lever to disrupt commercial cyber operations without relying solely on criminal prosecutions that may be difficult across borders.

The bigger picture

The cybermercenary market sits between conventional cybercrime and state-backed hacking. Governments are increasingly experimenting with sanctions, export controls and technology restrictions to raise the cost of operating in that grey zone.
