US commits $5B to AI-driven science
The US government has committed more than $5B to a cross-agency programme applying AI and national-laboratory computing to scientific research.

AI-for-science is moving from isolated corporate experiments toward a coordinated public research and procurement programme.
What happened
The US government announced more than $5B in federal commitments for the Genesis Mission, a cross-agency programme applying AI, scientific data and national-laboratory computing infrastructure to research and engineering.
More than 15 agencies are participating, and 278 initial projects have been selected. The programme spans healthcare research, energy systems, infrastructure, semiconductor development, autonomous laboratories, quantum technologies, materials discovery and analysis of scientific archives.
Private partners have separately committed more than $800M through a supporting consortium.
Why it matters
The programme could become a major customer and infrastructure provider for startups building scientific models, research agents, laboratory robotics, digital twins and specialised computing tools.
Public laboratories also hold large, difficult-to-replicate datasets and experimental facilities. Making those resources accessible through shared AI infrastructure could accelerate specialised model development.
The bigger picture
Governments are beginning to treat AI-for-science as strategic infrastructure rather than a collection of grants. The opportunity is faster experimentation and discovery; the risks are bureaucratic fragmentation, political influence over priorities and difficulty proving that automated research produces reliable scientific progress.
