Thatch Raises $108M at $1B Valuation

Rising healthcare costs are pushing employers to rethink how they provide insurance. Thatch has raised $108 million at a $1 billion valuation for a platform built around employer-funded individual health plans.

What happened

The financing came from existing investors including The General Partnership, Index Ventures, General Catalyst and Andreessen Horowitz.

Instead of placing every employee into the same group insurance plan, Thatch allows employers to provide a fixed healthcare allowance that workers can use to choose individual coverage through its marketplace.

Why it matters

Traditional group insurance can be expensive and inflexible, particularly for smaller companies operating across multiple states. Individualised benefits can shift more choice to employees while giving employers more predictable costs.

The model also creates a software opportunity around plan selection, reimbursement, administration and compliance rather than competing as an insurer itself.

The bigger picture

Healthtech is increasingly moving into the financial and administrative infrastructure around care, where large amounts of employer spending still flow through outdated systems.

Thatch reaching unicorn status suggests investors expect defined-contribution-style health benefits to become a larger alternative to conventional group plans. Adoption will still depend on regulation, plan quality and whether employees find the added choice genuinely useful rather than simply more complex.
