TerraPower Targets AI Data-Centre Power

TerraPower’s data-centre push connects two huge themes: AI’s growing electricity demand and the search for clean, firm power that can support it.

What happened

TerraPower is preparing its first data-centre project using its Natrium reactor design.

The design combines a nuclear reactor with molten-salt energy storage. The idea is that the reactor can keep running steadily while the storage system flexes electricity output for variable demand, including the volatile loads created by AI data centres.

That flexibility is important. Data centres do not only need a lot of power; they need reliable power at the right time. AI workloads can create intense and shifting demand, and grids in many regions are already under pressure.

Why it matters

This is not a VC funding story, but it is a strong AI-power infrastructure signal. AI data centres are forcing the energy sector to think differently about load growth, grid planning and clean power supply.

Nuclear power is attractive because it can provide firm, low-carbon electricity. The challenge is that nuclear projects are expensive, slow to permit and difficult to execute. TerraPower’s storage-backed design is trying to answer one of the key questions: can nuclear be not only clean and firm, but also flexible enough for modern electricity demand?

That is pulling nuclear, geothermal, batteries, grid software and onsite generation into the AI conversation.
