Tempus buys Personalis for $1.5B
Tempus AI has agreed to acquire Personalis for approximately $1.5B, combining clinical data and AI with personalised cancer-monitoring tests.
Tempus is moving beyond analysing clinical information toward owning more of the diagnostic data generated during cancer treatment.
What happened
Tempus AI agreed to acquire Personalis in a transaction valued at approximately $1.5B. Personalis shareholders will receive $16.25 per share, mostly in Tempus stock, although Tempus can pay up to half of the transaction value in cash.
The deal is expected to close in late 2026 or early 2027, subject to shareholder and regulatory approvals.
Personalis develops personalised blood tests for minimal residual disease, which means detecting small traces of cancer that may remain after treatment. Tempus already had an investment and product-development relationship with the company.
Why it matters
Cancer monitoring depends on high-quality biological data collected repeatedly over time. By combining diagnostic testing with its clinical-data and AI platform, Tempus can potentially support more of the workflow from generating patient-specific information to interpreting it.
The acquisition also gives Tempus proprietary testing capabilities rather than relying entirely on external laboratories.
The bigger picture
Healthcare AI companies are increasingly moving into the underlying data-generation layer. The most defensible platforms may be those that control both specialised clinical datasets and the tools used to analyse them.
Tempus still needs to integrate the businesses and demonstrate that the combination improves clinical decisions, but the transaction shows how AI-health platforms are consolidating around diagnostics, data and workflow ownership.
