SpaceX is no longer just a launch provider for the US military. It is becoming part of the infrastructure behind a new generation of space-based surveillance.

The US Space Force awarded SpaceX two task orders worth $1.6 billion for 18 Falcon 9 launches.
The missions will deploy space-based sensing and targeting systems from Vandenberg Space Force Base. Launches are expected to run through the end of 2027.
Why it matters
Military forces increasingly rely on satellites to detect, track and understand activity on Earth. Building the sensors is only one part of the challenge. They must also reach orbit quickly and reliably.
SpaceX’s reusable Falcon 9 fleet gives the US government access to a launch system that already operates at high frequency. That makes the company strategically important beyond its own satellite network.
The compressed timetable also shows how defence procurement is shifting toward commercial operators. Instead of developing a dedicated rocket for every programme, the government can buy launch capacity from a platform that already exists.
The bigger picture
Commercial space companies are becoming embedded across communications, navigation, imaging and defence. That creates large contracts but also concentrates critical capabilities in a small number of private providers.
For newer launch startups, the award shows the scale of the opportunity—and the difficulty of competing with SpaceX’s cost, reliability and cadence.
