SpaceX Starship Reaches Orbit for First Time

SpaceX's Starship reaches Earth orbit for the first time and deploys Starlink satellites, despite an early mission ending.

SpaceX Starship Reaches Orbit for First Time

Starship has reached orbit for the first time, marking a major milestone for SpaceX's next-generation launch system.

What happened

SpaceX's Starship reached Earth orbit and deployed 26 new Starlink satellites.

One of the upper stage's six Raptor engines shut down shortly after separation, and SpaceX ended the mission earlier than originally planned. The spacecraft was deorbited after roughly three hours.

Even with that limitation, the flight moved Starship beyond repeated suborbital testing.

Why it matters

Starship's long-term value depends on reaching orbital operations reliably and eventually achieving repeatable reuse.

The system is intended to support satellite deployment, NASA missions and high-capacity space transport. Reaching orbit is therefore a necessary step toward the economics SpaceX has promised for the programme.

The engine issue also shows that reliability remains a major engineering challenge.

The bigger picture

Space infrastructure is becoming more ambitious and more commercially important.

If Starship becomes operational at scale, it could lower the cost of deploying satellites and large payloads, reshaping parts of the space economy. This flight was not a complete success, but it was an important advance.
