SpaceX gets clearance to return Starship to flight

US regulators have cleared SpaceX to fly Starship again after a booster failure, reopening the path to larger launch and Starlink missions.

SpaceX gets clearance to return Starship to flight

Starship’s progress depends as much on regulatory confidence as it does on engineering speed.

What happened

The US Federal Aviation Administration cleared SpaceX to resume Starship flights after completing its investigation into a booster failure during a May test.

SpaceX identified issues involving engine startup, heat effects and alarm-system settings. The company says it has made hardware and operational changes in response.

The next flight could take place as early as 16 July and is expected to include third-generation Starlink satellites.

Why it matters

Starship is central to SpaceX’s plan to launch larger payloads at lower cost.

A successful return to flight would support future Starlink deployments and help demonstrate whether the vehicle can move from repeated testing toward more reliable operations.

The clearance also shows how SpaceX’s rapid test-and-iterate model depends on regulators accepting frequent failures as part of the development process.

The bigger picture

Reusable heavy-lift rockets could reshape the economics of satellites, space infrastructure and future orbital services.

But the technology only becomes strategically valuable if launch cadence and reliability improve together. Starship’s next phase is therefore not just about whether it can fly again, but whether it can turn experimental progress into repeatable infrastructure.
