Sortrace raises SEK8m for waste analysis

Sortrace secured SEK8m to expand computer-vision analysis that helps municipalities and recycling operators identify incorrectly sorted waste.

Sortrace raises SEK8m for waste analysis

Recycling systems need to know where material is being sorted incorrectly before they can address the problem. Sortrace uses camera data to make those gaps more visible.

What happened

Stockholm-based Sortrace secured SEK8m in financing, with Almi Invest, Gorilla Capital and Antler participating. The capital will support commercial expansion, product development and additional installations.

Its platform combines camera technology, computer vision and data analysis to examine material flows. Cameras on collection vehicles can analyse waste as bins are emptied, with results linked to collection information to help operators identify sorting problems.

Why it matters

A general recycling target does not show an operator which routes or collection points need attention. More detailed information could help direct changes to the places where they are most useful.

The potential benefit depends on the quality of the analysis and the actions taken afterwards. Detecting a sorting problem does not automatically mean that the material will be recovered or that behaviour will change.

The bigger picture

Waste management is an example of a physical industry where better measurement can create opportunities for practical software products. The data has to fit into collection operations and support decisions that customers can act on.

Sortrace’s next phase is to expand that deployment while developing the product beyond its initial applications. Its progress can be assessed through reliable installations, useful customer decisions and measurable changes in material handling.
