SoftBank may be looking beyond humanoid robots toward a more immediate industrial-autonomy opportunity: making existing heavy machinery operate with less human intervention.

What happened

SoftBank is reportedly considering an acquisition of Swiss startup Gravis Robotics, an ETH Zurich spinout developing autonomous systems for construction, mining and agricultural equipment.

The potential transaction could value Gravis at more than $500 million, but no final agreement has been announced and the structure of any deal remains undecided. The report should therefore be treated as an active negotiation rather than a completed acquisition.

Gravis develops software and sensing systems that can be integrated into heavy equipment, allowing machines to understand their surroundings and perform tasks with greater autonomy.

Why it matters

Industrial machinery offers a different route to robotics adoption than building a general-purpose humanoid from scratch. Construction sites, mines and farms already operate expensive equipment, creating a clearer economic case for retrofitting or upgrading those machines with autonomy.

For SoftBank, Gravis could add an industrial layer to a robotics portfolio historically associated with consumer and humanoid systems. It would also provide exposure to markets where labour shortages, safety requirements and equipment utilisation can justify automation spending.

The bigger picture

The next robotics wave may be won through task-specific autonomy inside existing machines, not only through entirely new robot forms. Companies that can work across different vehicle types and unpredictable outdoor environments may become important infrastructure providers for physical AI.

Gravis still has to prove that its systems can operate safely and reliably across varied sites. Until a transaction is signed, the strategic logic is clearer than the deal certainty.
