Sofinnova Closes €82M Medtech Creation Fund
Sofinnova closes an oversubscribed fund to build new medtech companies from clinical and scientific ideas.

Sofinnova has closed a new medtech company-creation fund, targeting the difficult gap between promising science and investable medical-device startups.
What happened
Sofinnova Partners closed its MD Start IV fund at €82 million, above the €63 million raised for its predecessor.
The fund does not simply invest in existing startups. It creates new medtech companies from scratch around technologies developed with clinicians, engineers and scientists.
The vehicle aims to create six to eight companies across Europe and the US over five years.
Why it matters
Medtech startups often need specialised regulatory expertise, clinical validation and experienced operators long before they can become conventional venture-backed companies.
Company creation can help assemble those ingredients around early technologies that might otherwise remain inside labs or hospitals.
The larger fund suggests continued appetite for medical-device innovation despite long timelines.
The bigger picture
Life sciences and healthtech venture creation is becoming more structured.
Rather than waiting for founders to emerge fully formed, specialist investors are building companies around clinical needs, intellectual property and operating talent. That model can be especially useful in regulated categories such as medtech.
