Situational Awareness Sells AI Stock Portfolio

Situational Awareness’s reported public-stock sale highlights the split between private AI scarcity and public-market AI risk.

Situational Awareness Sells AI Stock Portfolio

The AI trade is starting to split between scarce private stakes and public companies carrying huge infrastructure risk.

What happened

Situational Awareness, the AI-focused hedge fund founded by former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner, reportedly sold most of its public stock portfolio to Citadel after steep losses in AI-infrastructure equities. The fund is still reported to hold private AI investments, including Anthropic shares.

The contrast matters. Public AI-infrastructure stocks are exposed to earnings expectations, capex concerns, leverage and market rotations. Private frontier-lab shares remain harder to access and are often valued through scarcity as much as near-term financials.

Why it matters

This is not a startup funding round, but it is a sharp capital-market signal for AI. Investors may still believe in long-term AI growth while becoming more selective about where the financial upside sits.

For startups, that distinction matters. Private AI companies can still attract premium valuations if they are viewed as scarce strategic assets. But public-market investors may punish companies where AI spending looks expensive before revenue catches up.

The bigger picture

AI enthusiasm has not disappeared, but it is becoming more financially specific. The market is starting to ask who captures AI value, who pays for the infrastructure and who gets stuck with the bill.
