Singular Photonics Raises €1.85M for Sensors

Singular Photonics is a small financing item, but it sits in an important deeptech layer: better sensors for machines that need to see and measure the world.

What happened

Edinburgh-based Singular Photonics raised €1.85M / $2.15M in an oversubscribed round led by ACF Investors.

Wren Capital, Cambridge Angels, Scottish Enterprise, Quantum Exponential and Old College Capital also participated. The company develops SPAD image sensors with on-chip computation.

SPAD sensors, or single-photon avalanche diode sensors, can detect extremely low levels of light. That makes them relevant for advanced imaging, scientific instruments, autonomy, depth sensing and other applications where conventional cameras may struggle.

Why it matters

AI systems often depend on the quality of their inputs. In robotics, autonomy, medical imaging and industrial inspection, better sensing can be just as important as better algorithms.

Singular Photonics’ on-chip computation angle is also relevant. Processing data closer to the sensor can reduce latency, lower data-transfer needs and make edge devices more efficient. That matters for systems that cannot always rely on cloud compute.

The round is small, so this is not a top-tier funding signal by size. But deeptech hardware often begins with modest capital before proving manufacturability, performance and customer demand.

The bigger picture

The physical-AI stack needs more than models and robots. It needs sensors, chips, optics, power systems and embedded computation. Singular Photonics fits that less visible infrastructure layer. If AI is going to operate reliably in the physical world, the machines using it need sharper, faster and more efficient ways to perceive reality.
