Siemens buys Defacto to automate chip design
Siemens is adding automation at the earliest stages of system-on-chip creation as chiplet architectures make manual integration harder.

Modern processors are assembled from a growing number of intellectual-property blocks, interfaces and specialised computing components. Connecting them correctly is becoming a design bottleneck of its own.
What happened
Siemens agreed to acquire Grenoble-based Defacto Technologies for an undisclosed amount.
Defacto develops electronic-design automation software focused on register-transfer-level system-on-chip creation. Its tools automate the assembly of reusable IP blocks, restructure designs, manage power intent and create a persistent design database that can be used through later implementation and verification stages.
Siemens plans to integrate these capabilities into its existing semiconductor-design portfolio. Defacto’s tools support architectures including Arm and RISC-V and are intended to reduce the manual work required to explore different system configurations.
Why it matters
Chip design is moving from relatively monolithic processors toward configurable systems and chiplets. Engineers must combine many components while meeting power, timing, physical-layout and performance constraints.
Errors introduced during early assembly can become expensive to correct later. Automating more of this work can reduce development time and allow teams to evaluate feasibility before committing to detailed implementation.
The bigger picture
AI is increasing demand for specialised silicon, but the number of engineers capable of designing advanced chips remains limited. Electronic-design automation therefore becomes a leverage point: better software allows existing teams to handle more complexity.
The acquisition also shows why semiconductor software is consolidating around large platforms. Customers want continuity from architecture through verification and manufacturing preparation. Siemens must now integrate Defacto without losing the specialised product focus that made it valuable.
