Shopify Opens Checkout to AI Agents
Shopify expands agentic commerce by letting browser-based AI agents complete purchases through checkout.

Shopify is moving agentic commerce beyond product discovery and into the actual transaction layer.
What happened
Shopify expanded support for browser-based AI agents so they can complete purchases, not just search catalogues or fill shopping carts.
The new tools allow agents to inspect checkout details, change addresses or delivery options and submit transactions after user authorisation. The capability includes Shop Pay and is rolling out to eligible Shopify merchants.
That makes Shopify storefronts more accessible to software agents acting on behalf of consumers.
Why it matters
Agentic commerce only works if agents can move through the full buying journey. Searching for products is useful, but the real value comes when software can compare options, select a product and complete the purchase safely.
Shopify controls a large merchant network, so enabling agent checkout could accelerate a shift in which online stores are optimised not only for human shoppers but also for machine shoppers.
The bigger picture
Commerce interfaces are changing. Instead of browsing pages, users may increasingly ask agents to find and buy what they need.
That creates a new infrastructure layer around permission, identity, checkout controls and merchant compatibility. Shopify is positioning itself early in that shift.
