Scale AI Appoints New CEO Francis deSouza

Francis deSouza will take over as Scale AI pushes beyond training data into enterprise and government applications.

Scale AI Appoints New CEO Francis deSouza

Scale AI’s new chief executive was chosen for a different phase of the company: selling and deploying AI, not simply supplying the data used to train it.

What happened

Scale AI has appointed Francis deSouza as chief executive, effective 10 August. He replaces interim CEO Jason Droege, who has led the company since founder Alexandr Wang left in 2025 to join Meta after Meta made a $14.3 billion investment in Scale.

deSouza brings experience running large technology businesses. He previously served as chief operating officer of Google Cloud and as CEO of Illumina, the DNA-sequencing company. His background combines enterprise sales, cloud operations, security and management of a public company.

Scale built its original position by providing training data and human evaluations for advanced AI models. It is now expanding into applications for businesses and governments. The company expects its applications business to become larger than its data business within 18 months, although that remains a forward-looking target.

Why it matters

Training-data services can be valuable, but the market is becoming more competitive as model developers build internal capabilities and use more synthetic data. Enterprise applications offer a route to larger, longer customer relationships—but they also put Scale into competition with software vendors, consultancies and AI labs.

Hiring an experienced cloud operator signals that commercial execution and organisational stability are now central priorities.

The bigger picture

AI infrastructure companies are moving upwards into applications because that is where customers experience the product and where stronger margins may sit. Scale’s leadership change reflects that transition. Its next challenge is proving it can turn model-development expertise into repeatable enterprise software without losing the data business that made it important.
