London-based Sava has raised $36 million and partnered with diabetes technology company Ascensia to commercialise its miniature glucose sensor.
What happened
Sava's Series B was led by Ascensia Diabetes Care, alongside investors including Balderton Capital, Norrsken VC, Simplyhealth Ventures and others. Sava develops a wearable sensor designed to measure glucose in interstitial fluid using very short sensing elements placed beneath the skin. The company says those elements are much shorter than conventional continuous-glucose-monitor sensors. Alongside the financing, Ascensia agreed to act as a commercialisation and distribution partner, initially in Europe. Wider market availability still depends on the applicable testing and regulatory processes.
Why it matters
Continuous glucose monitoring helps people manage diabetes, but comfort, wearability and access remain important considerations. A smaller sensing design could improve the user experience if it consistently achieves clinically appropriate accuracy. An established distribution partner can help a young device company reach healthcare customers and navigate commercial channels.
The bigger picture
Medical wearables increasingly compete not just on data availability but on validated accuracy, affordability and integration into care. Hardware miniaturisation is promising, yet the decisive evidence for Sava will be clinical performance and regulatory outcomes, not the dimensions of the sensor alone.
