UK edtech startup Sainaptic has secured £1 million to make assessment and grading workflows faster while retaining human responsibility for final qualification decisions.
What happened
The funding was co-led by Cornerstone VC and Ufi Ventures, with participation from Elm Venture Partners and Brighteye Ventures. Founded by Kavitha Ravindran and Rajeshwari Iyer, Sainaptic develops domain-specific AI software for professional and vocational assessments that include essays, portfolios, presentations and other open-ended submissions. It announced a partnership with Skilltech Solutions to integrate marking support into assessment delivery software, with an initial offering expected in the first quarter of 2027. Sainaptic says some assessment marking time has been reduced from 45 minutes to eight seconds and that results deviate by less than 1% from expert assessors. Those figures are company-reported and need validation across different qualifications and learner groups.
Why it matters
Vocational qualifications often require assessors to evaluate nuanced evidence rather than mark simple multiple-choice answers. Manual review can create bottlenecks for learners and training providers. AI-supported grading might speed initial evaluation and feedback, but fairness, consistency and appeal mechanisms remain essential.
The bigger picture
Education AI is moving into high-consequence administrative decisions, where efficiency cannot be separated from accountability. Sainaptic's opportunity is to support qualified professionals, not replace their judgment. Future adoption will depend on independent accuracy testing, transparent audit trails and regulatory acceptance.
