Rivian acquires Third Dimension for autonomous driving
Rivian acquires world-model startup Third Dimension to strengthen simulation and training for autonomous driving.

What happened
Rivian acquired Third Dimension, a startup developing world models for autonomous-driving systems. Financial terms were not disclosed. The company’s technology and team will join Rivian’s work on vehicle autonomy and simulation.
Why it matters
Driving systems need experience with rare weather, unusual road layouts and unpredictable human behaviour. Simulation can expose software to those situations repeatedly without risking vehicles or people. Owning the modelling technology may help Rivian iterate faster and reduce reliance on outside providers.
The bigger picture
Automakers increasingly view autonomy as a software and data challenge, driving acquisitions of teams specialising in simulation, perception and generative models. The deal strengthens Rivian’s technical resources, but it does not establish that fully autonomous driving is close to commercial deployment.
