Rivercell Raises $25M for Virtual Cell AI

Paris-based Rivercell has emerged from stealth with $25 million to combine AI prediction with laboratory experiments on living cells.

What happened

The startup announced seed funding led by HV Capital, with participation from HCVC, Alven and Bpifrance Digital Venture. Its objective is to build models that predict how cells respond to drugs and genetic interventions. Rather than rely solely on publicly available biological datasets, Rivercell plans to operate automated laboratory systems that generate controlled experimental observations and improve subsequent models. The company is early-stage and has not demonstrated that its platform can reliably predict outcomes across the full complexity of human biology.

Why it matters

Cell behaviour is central to drug development, but biological responses vary with context, environment and cell type. Better predictions could help researchers eliminate weak candidates earlier and design more informative experiments. By gathering its own data, Rivercell also seeks to reduce dependence on datasets not designed for its specific research questions.

The bigger picture

Virtual-cell research is one expression of a wider shift toward closed-loop scientific discovery: models choose experiments, experiments generate evidence, and evidence improves the models. Strong technical potential does not automatically translate into new medicines. Validation, reproducibility and the quality of downstream decisions will determine commercial value.
