Revolut Clears US Banking Licence Hurdle

Revolut won conditional US banking licence approval, moving closer to full-stack banking in a difficult expansion market.

Revolut Clears US Banking Licence Hurdle

Revolut’s global banking ambitions just cleared an important US hurdle.

What happened

Revolut won conditional approval for a US banking licence from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. The company expects to launch the bank in the first half of 2027 with around 160 employees.

The planned US bank would support multicurrency services linked to Revolut’s European and Latin American operations, giving the company a larger regulated foothold in one of the world’s most competitive financial markets.

Why it matters

Revolut has long been trying to become more than a payments and foreign-exchange app. A US banking licence would move it deeper into deposits, lending and regulated financial services.

That matters because fintech expansion is no longer only about user growth. The hardest companies to build are those that can combine product speed with regulatory durability across multiple jurisdictions.

The bigger picture

Global fintechs are entering a more mature phase. Winning customers is one layer; earning licences, managing compliance and building trust with regulators is another. Revolut’s conditional approval shows that the next fintech race is increasingly about regulated infrastructure, not just slick app design.
