Quintessent Raises $40M for AI Interconnects

Quintessent is attacking one of the less visible bottlenecks in AI infrastructure: how quickly and efficiently chips can talk to each other.

What happened

Quintessent raised a $40M Series A led by Cycle Capital, with participation from investors including Ciena, Goldman Sachs XIG-Industry Ventures, Hina Liberty Capital, Susquehanna International Group, Safar Partners and existing backers.

The company is developing optical interconnect technology for AI data centres and is sampling its first quantum-dot-based comb laser product. The goal is to improve the communication layer inside large-scale compute clusters.

Why it matters

AI infrastructure discussions often focus on GPUs, but networking is becoming just as important. As clusters scale, data needs to move between chips, servers and racks with low latency and lower power consumption.

Copper interconnects become less efficient as distance, bandwidth and density increase. Optical technologies could become a key part of making AI data centres larger without making them dramatically less efficient.

The bigger picture

The AI hardware stack is widening. Startups are not only building chips; they are building memory systems, cooling, power conversion, fibre, photonics and interconnects. Quintessent sits in that infrastructure layer, where small performance gains can matter at data-centre scale.
