Quantinuum secures $100M to scale quantum manufacturing
Quantinuum has finalised a $100 million US CHIPS R&D award to support domestic manufacturing for trapped-ion quantum computing.

Quantum computing is increasingly becoming an industrial supply-chain challenge rather than only a laboratory research race.
What happened
Quantinuum finalised a $100 million CHIPS R&D funding agreement with the US Department of Commerce. The programme supports trapped-ion quantum computing manufacturing, with GlobalFoundries working on next-generation ion traps and electronics and Monarch Quantum contributing photonics components.
Why it matters
Building useful quantum systems requires repeatable fabrication, control electronics and specialised photonics at scale. Public funding aimed at those manufacturing layers suggests governments increasingly view quantum hardware as strategic industrial infrastructure.
The bigger picture
Quantum is beginning to follow the path of advanced semiconductors: scientific leadership alone is not enough. Countries also want domestic manufacturing capability, supply-chain resilience and production know-how around the underlying hardware.
