Pulley Shuts Down and Sends Customers to Carta

Pulley, once one of the most visible challengers to Carta in cap-table software, is shutting down.

What happened

Pulley said its final day of service will be 8 December and has partnered with Carta to help customers migrate.

The company had raised more than $50 million from investors including General Catalyst, Stripe and Founders Fund.

Pulley built software for startups to manage ownership, equity plans and cap tables — infrastructure that becomes increasingly important as companies raise more rounds and add employees and investors.

Why it matters

Startup infrastructure looked especially attractive during the venture boom because every new company needed tools for finance, equity, HR and legal operations.

But many categories proved difficult to differentiate, particularly where incumbents already had strong network effects and switching costs.

Pulley's closure shows that strong funding and a large market are not enough if the product cannot create a durable wedge against established platforms.

The bigger picture

The shutdown is another sign of consolidation across startup software.

As venture-backed companies become more cost-conscious, point solutions increasingly need to prove they can either become core systems of record or expand into broader platforms. Smaller tools that sit between those positions may face growing pressure from incumbents and bundled products.
