Profound Raises $180M for AI Search Visibility

The shift from traditional search results to AI-generated answers is creating a new software category around visibility inside systems like ChatGPT and AI search. Profound has raised $180 million at a $1.8 billion valuation to scale into that transition.

What happened

Sequoia and Kleiner Perkins led the Series D, which arrives only seven months after Profound's previous $96 million round. The company says it now serves more than 1,000 enterprise customers.

Profound helps brands track where and how they appear in AI-generated responses, understand which sources models rely on, and adjust content strategies to improve visibility.

Why it matters

Traditional SEO assumes users click through ranked links. AI interfaces increasingly answer the question directly, which changes how brands compete for discovery.

That has created interest in concepts such as answer-engine optimisation and generative-engine optimisation. Companies now want to know whether models mention them, how accurately they are represented, and which content influences those answers.

The bigger picture

AI search is redistributing power across the internet. Publishers, retailers and brands may receive less direct traffic even as model-generated answers become an important discovery channel.

Profound's rapid fundraising suggests enterprises are willing to pay for measurement tools before the category is fully standardised. The key question is whether AI visibility becomes a durable budget line similar to SEO and analytics, or whether major search and model platforms eventually absorb the functionality themselves.
