Ponda secures €2.76M for wetland biomaterials
Ponda has secured a €2.76M UK grant to build a demonstration supply chain for bulrush-based insulation grown on rewetted land.
A new biomaterial cannot scale through laboratory performance alone. It needs farmers, processing capacity, repeatable quality and customers willing to use it.
What happened
Bristol-based Ponda secured a €2.76M UK government grant for a 30-month demonstration project covering approximately 30 hectares of wetland farming.
Ponda produces BioPuff, a plant-based insulation material made from bulrush grown on rewetted land. The project brings together farmers, researchers, conservation organisations and outdoor-clothing company Berghaus to test the full supply chain from cultivation through processing and end use.
Why it matters
Peatlands store large amounts of carbon, but drained land releases emissions. Rewetting can restore those ecosystems, although landowners still need an economic reason to change how the land is used.
Growing useful wetland crops could create a revenue stream while supplying lower-impact materials for clothing and other products.
The bigger picture
Many biomaterial startups focus on the final product while underestimating the difficulty of building the agricultural and industrial system behind it. Ponda’s project is important because it tests whether environmental restoration and commercial material production can work together at meaningful scale.
The key questions will be whether yields remain consistent, processing costs are competitive and buyers can absorb enough material to support a permanent supply chain after the grant period ends.
