Plantopia raises $9M for oat-grown casein

Animal-free dairy companies usually rely on fermentation tanks. Plantopia is trying to grow milk proteins inside oats instead.

What happened

Israeli foodtech startup Plantopia raised $9M, led by Schreiber Foods and Siddhi Capital, with participation from other dairy-sector investors.

The company genetically engineers sprouted oats to produce casein, the group of proteins responsible for many of milk's functional properties. Casein helps cheese stretch, melt and form its characteristic structure, making it difficult to replace with conventional plant ingredients.

Plantopia plans to establish a production facility in Israel and move from research into commercial manufacturing.

Why it matters

Precision-fermentation companies can produce dairy proteins without animals, but fermentation facilities are expensive and require specialised equipment. Plants may offer a different production route with potentially lower infrastructure costs and familiar agricultural inputs.

The technical question is yield. Plantopia must produce enough purified protein per crop to compete on cost while meeting food-safety and regulatory standards.

The bigger picture

Alternative-protein investment is moving away from simple plant-based substitutes toward ingredients that reproduce the functionality of animal proteins.

Strategic backing from dairy companies suggests commercial interest and potential routes into existing product development. But the sector has repeatedly shown that scientific success does not guarantee economical scale. Plantopia's next test is whether oat-based production can deliver consistent casein at industrial volumes and prices acceptable to mainstream food manufacturers.
