OpenAI Reportedly Buys Glass Imaging for $300M
OpenAI reportedly acquires smartphone-camera startup Glass Imaging as its consumer hardware ambitions expand.

OpenAI has reportedly acquired Glass Imaging, a startup founded by former Apple camera engineers, in a deal said to value the company at more than $300 million.
What happened
Glass Imaging develops neural image-processing software designed to improve smartphone camera output using AI rather than relying only on conventional image-signal processing. The reported acquisition would bring that camera expertise in-house at OpenAI.
The transaction value has not been publicly confirmed by the companies.
Why it matters
OpenAI has been expanding beyond software into consumer hardware. Camera and imaging technology could become strategically important for devices that need to understand the physical world through vision rather than only respond to text or voice.
Owning the underlying image-processing stack could also reduce dependence on third-party hardware suppliers.
The bigger picture
AI companies increasingly want control over the full user experience, from models to devices and sensors. Vision is likely to be central to that shift because multimodal assistants need continuous, high-quality perception of their surroundings. Glass Imaging would give OpenAI a specialised capability at that hardware-software boundary.
