OpenAI Launches Always-On Dots Agents

OpenAI is pushing beyond conversational assistants with Dots, a new class of persistent agents designed to stay active and work toward user-defined goals over time.

What happened

The company launched Dots, autonomous agents powered by GPT-6 Astra.

Dots can operate across connected applications and continue working with less constant supervision than a standard ChatGPT conversation.

The initial rollout targets eligible paid users and includes integrations with tools such as Slack, Teams, Codex and ChatGPT Work.

OpenAI says users retain controls over agent actions.

Why it matters

A chatbot waits for a prompt.

A persistent agent can monitor context, take actions and continue working after the original request.

That changes the product from a question-answering interface into something closer to an always-on software operator.

It also creates more serious safety questions because the agent may have access to communications, files and external tools.

The bigger picture

The next major AI interface may be delegation rather than conversation.

If users can assign goals instead of step-by-step tasks, software becomes much more proactive.

That creates enormous product opportunity but raises the importance of permissions, auditability and reliable stopping conditions.

Dots represents a meaningful shift toward that model: AI systems that persist, act and coordinate across applications rather than simply respond inside one chat window.
