OpenAI launched a programme giving 100,000 academic researchers free access to its advanced AI models through 2027. The first 10,000 researchers are expected to receive access this summer, with broader rollout continuing through 2027.
The programme gives researchers access to powerful closed models without requiring them to pay commercial rates. It also keeps the model weights and training data controlled by OpenAI.

Research is becoming one of the most important proving grounds for advanced AI. Scientists can use models to help with literature review, coding, data analysis, hypothesis generation and workflow automation.
For OpenAI, academic distribution creates several advantages. It can encourage researchers to build habits around its tools, surface new use cases and strengthen the perception that frontier models belong inside serious scientific workflows.
