OpenAI creates CTO of Compute role
OpenAI promotes Uday Ruddarraju to CTO of Compute as chips, power and data-centre capacity become core strategic priorities.

Frontier AI is no longer only a research problem. It is also a massive infrastructure operation involving chips, networking, storage, data centres and electricity.
What happened
OpenAI promoted Uday Ruddarraju to the newly designated role of CTO of Compute. He had previously led the company’s compute and infrastructure organisation after joining from xAI.
The role covers the systems required to train and operate large AI models, including networking, storage and machine-learning infrastructure. It formalises compute as a distinct executive responsibility inside the company.
Why it matters
AI companies can only translate model ambitions into products if they can secure and operate enough computing capacity. That means negotiating access to accelerators, designing reliable infrastructure and managing enormous energy and capital requirements.
A dedicated compute chief suggests that these constraints are now strategic enough to require their own leadership structure. The challenge is no longer simply building better models, but making sure the underlying infrastructure can support them economically and reliably.
The bigger picture
The frontier AI race is increasingly becoming an infrastructure race. Model labs are moving closer to the worlds of semiconductor supply, cloud architecture, power development and industrial project management.
As training and inference needs grow, the companies with the best research may not automatically win. Execution across compute procurement, energy and systems engineering could become just as decisive as algorithmic progress.
