OpenAI will cover the infrastructure and electricity-service costs associated with a planned $20 billion data-centre project in Georgia.
The agreement includes financial assurances and allows up to one gigawatt of flexible demand response, meaning the facility could reduce or shift electricity use when the grid is under pressure. The project could eventually require as much as 3.2 gigawatts of power.
Why it matters
AI data centres can require new power lines, substations and generation capacity. Without clear rules, some of those costs may be distributed across households and other businesses through higher electricity charges.
Making the project responsible for its own grid-related costs creates a clearer link between the demand it generates and the infrastructure required to serve it.
The bigger picture
As AI facilities grow from large buildings into multi-gigawatt industrial projects, access to electricity is becoming as important as access to chips. Future data-centre agreements will increasingly be judged not only by investment and jobs, but by who pays for the grid and how the facility behaves during periods of peak demand.
