Nvidia Backs MediaTek’s Custom AI Chips
Nvidia’s MediaTek investment points to a wider custom-silicon strategy for AI data-centre demand.

Nvidia’s AI infrastructure strategy is expanding beyond selling GPUs into shaping more of the custom-chip ecosystem.
What happened
Nvidia is investing $3.5B into MediaTek as part of a broader push around custom AI chips. MediaTek will use Nvidia technology for custom chips aimed at hyperscalers and AI companies, including chips that can plug into Nvidia’s data-centre ecosystem.
This is not a startup funding round, but it is a major AI infrastructure signal because it shows Nvidia deepening its role in how next-generation AI hardware gets designed, built and connected.
Why it matters
Large AI customers increasingly want custom silicon for cost, power and workload optimisation. The challenge for Nvidia is to support that demand without losing control of the stack.
A partnership with MediaTek gives Nvidia another path into custom chips while keeping its networking, software and data-centre ecosystem central to the buildout.
The bigger picture
AI infrastructure is no longer only about who sells the fastest accelerator. It is becoming a full-stack competition across chips, interconnects, systems, software, data centres and financing. Nvidia is trying to remain the organising layer even as customers demand more specialised silicon.
