Nous Research reportedly seeks funding at $1.5B valuation

Nous Research is reportedly finalising at least $75M of new funding at a $1.5B valuation as its open-source Hermes agent builds a large developer following.

Nous Research reportedly seeks funding at $1.5B valuation

Open-source AI developer Nous Research is reportedly close to a new financing that would place a $1.5B value on the company, but the round has not been formally confirmed.

What happened

The company is said to be raising at least $75M in a round led by Robot Ventures, with significant participation from Union Square Ventures and other investors. Nous declined to comment, and the reported investors did not confirm the transaction.

Founded in 2023, Nous had previously raised about $70M. Its best-known product is Hermes, an open-source agent that can run locally on a computer or on a remote server. Hermes includes built-in capabilities such as web search, coding and image understanding, and can interact with users through services including Telegram and Discord. Nous also develops models focused on coding and mathematics.

Hermes has built unusually strong open-source distribution, with roughly 214,000 GitHub stars and nearly 40,000 forks reported at the time of the funding story. Nous also offers a hosted version with paid plans ranging from about $20 to $200 per month.

Why it matters

The funding interest suggests investors see open-source adoption as a path to commercial value rather than merely a community project. A widely deployed local agent can create a large developer ecosystem, while hosted plans provide a way to monetise users who do not want to manage their own infrastructure.

The challenge is converting popularity into durable revenue without weakening the openness that drove adoption.

The bigger picture

The agent market is splitting between closed, cloud-only products and systems users can run or modify themselves. Nous is betting that control, local deployment and developer extensibility can become advantages as companies worry about privacy, cost and vendor dependence.

Until the financing is announced, however, the amount, valuation and final investor group should remain treated as reported rather than completed.
