Northwood raises $375m for ground networks

Satellites can only deliver useful services if their data reaches the ground. Northwood is raising substantial capital for that less visible part of the space economy.

What happened

Northwood closed a $375m Series C co-led by Andreessen Horowitz and DFJ Growth. The round carries a $2bn valuation.

The company builds antennas, software and ground-network infrastructure for commercial, government and allied space missions. Funding will support network expansion, manufacturing, recruitment and delivery on existing contracts. A separate multiyear credit facility from HSBC Innovation Banking will support working capital and further network expansion.

Why it matters

Launching more satellites does not automatically create the capacity to communicate with them reliably. Ground infrastructure has to keep pace, across different orbits, operating requirements and customer locations.

A shared network can give satellite operators an alternative to building every ground connection themselves. The value comes from coverage, availability and reliable service when a mission needs it.

The bigger picture

Northwood’s financing highlights an infrastructure business underneath the more visible launch and satellite markets. Its progress will depend on manufacturing equipment, securing suitable sites and turning those assets into dependable network capacity.

That makes deployment and service execution central to the story. The opportunity is substantial, but a large financing round is the means to build the network, rather than a substitute for building it.
