Norrsken Evolve closes €62M pre-seed fund

Norrsken Evolve has exceeded its target for a fund designed to write the first institutional cheques into technical impact startups.

Norrsken Evolve closes €62M pre-seed fund

European venture capital has become increasingly concentrated in large rounds, while founders working on scientific and industrial problems still struggle to raise the first institutional cheque.

What happened

Norrsken Evolve closed an oversubscribed €62 million pre-seed fund, above its original €40 million target.

The fund plans to invest up to €500,000 per company across areas including climate technology, healthtech, biotechnology, robotics, AI infrastructure and advanced materials. It expects to back roughly 20 to 30 startups each year.

Backers include the European Investment Fund, Saminvest, SmartCap Green Fund and Skaala. Norrsken Evolve is also establishing a presence in Amsterdam as it expands its sourcing and support network beyond the Nordic region.

Why it matters

Pre-seed capital is particularly important for technical founders because they may need to build prototypes, validate scientific assumptions or navigate regulation before conventional revenue exists.

Generalist investors often avoid these companies because progress does not fit short software milestones. A specialised fund can evaluate technical risk and provide introductions to later investors who understand longer development cycles.

The bigger picture

Europe has strong universities and public research, but repeatedly loses value between invention and company formation. Funds targeting the earliest stage are one way to close that commercialisation gap.

The challenge is portfolio construction. Small initial cheques can create broad exposure, but deeptech companies often require substantial follow-on capital. Norrsken Evolve’s success will depend not only on finding promising founders, but also on helping them reach the evidence required to unlock much larger rounds.
