NC CHAIN Launches With $4.4M to Bring AI to Rural Healthcare
The three-year initiative will help smaller North Carolina hospitals and clinics evaluate and implement healthcare AI safely.

The North Carolina Collaborative Health AI Network, or NC CHAIN, has launched with a three-year $4.4 million grant to support AI adoption in rural and resource-limited healthcare settings.
What happened
The initiative brings together large health systems and smaller providers to share expertise, evaluation methods and implementation support. It will help rural hospitals and clinics understand, select and safely deploy AI tools for patient care.
Why it matters
Smaller providers often lack the technical staff, procurement resources and governance frameworks needed to assess fast-moving AI products. A shared network can reduce duplicated work and prevent the digital divide from widening.
The bigger picture
Healthcare AI will not deliver broad benefits if adoption remains concentrated in wealthy urban systems. Collaborative infrastructure may become as important as the technology itself for making useful tools accessible and safe.
