MintNeuro Raises €4.4M for Neural-Device Chips

Neurotechnology companies need unusually specialised electronics, but custom chip development is expensive and slow. MintNeuro is trying to create a dedicated semiconductor layer for the sector.

What happened

Imperial College London spinout MintNeuro raised €4.4 million to advance specialised chips for neural implants and wearable neurotechnology. The company has already produced working silicon and has worked with neurotechnology developers including Motif Neurotech and Amber Therapeutics.

The new capital is intended to support product launch and commercial scale-up as MintNeuro moves beyond technical validation.

Why it matters

Neural devices have demanding requirements around power consumption, signal quality, size and reliability. General-purpose components can create compromises, while designing custom silicon from scratch can be prohibitively expensive for early-stage medical-device companies.

A reusable semiconductor platform designed specifically for neural interfaces could therefore reduce development time and lower barriers for companies building implants or wearables.

The bigger picture

As brain-computer interfaces and neurostimulation technologies move closer to commercial use, supporting infrastructure becomes more important. The market may not be won only by companies building the final therapeutic or interface.

Specialised suppliers of chips, sensors, packaging and software could become critical picks-and-shovels businesses for neurotechnology. MintNeuro is positioning itself in that enabling layer.
