Mazama Raises $135M for Superhot Geothermal

Mazama Energy has raised $135 million to develop superhot geothermal wells as demand grows for round-the-clock clean power.

Mazama Raises $135M for Superhot Geothermal

Mazama Energy has raised fresh capital to pursue one of the more ambitious approaches to clean firm power: drilling into extremely hot rock and producing energy from deeper geothermal resources.

What happened

The company raised an oversubscribed $135 million Series B to develop horizontal wells in superhot rock. Mazama is targeting roughly 15 megawatts per well and plans to begin generating electricity from its technology next year.

The approach is designed to expand geothermal beyond the limited locations where naturally accessible reservoirs already exist.

Why it matters

Electricity demand from data centres, electrification and industrial loads is growing faster than many grids can add new firm generation.

Wind and solar remain important, but their output varies with weather. Enhanced geothermal aims to provide continuous, dispatchable clean power, making it particularly interesting for customers such as data centres that need reliable electricity around the clock.

The bigger picture

The AI infrastructure boom is increasingly becoming an energy technology story. Startups working on geothermal, nuclear, storage and grid flexibility are attracting more attention because compute growth is colliding with slow power-project timelines. Mazama's round shows investors are willing to fund technically difficult energy systems when they could unlock large amounts of dependable electricity.
