Matters has emerged from stealth with $5 million in pre-seed funding to build a consumer banking product centred on an AI financial adviser.
What happened
The round was led by Swedish investor Jakob Johansson with participation from founders and executives including former Klarna COO Knut Frängsmyr and Voi co-founder Douglas Stark. Matters plans to combine standard neobank services with an AI adviser that helps users manage spending and savings. The company says it will charge a monthly subscription and return some revenue streams normally retained by banks, such as interchange and foreign-exchange fees, through cashback. The product has not yet launched at scale, and Matters says its first consumer offering is expected in the coming weeks.
Why it matters
Early neobanks competed primarily on mobile user experience, lower fees and faster onboarding. Matters is betting that the next competitive layer is automated financial decision support, where software proactively helps customers budget and save rather than simply display transactions.
The bigger picture
The concept is promising but unproven. Matters still needs to demonstrate regulatory execution, customer acquisition and whether AI advice actually improves financial outcomes. The broader signal is that consumer fintech is moving toward agent-like assistance as a core product feature.
