Marvell strikes $115bn Lumentum deal
Marvell agreed to acquire Lumentum in an all-stock deal with a $115bn enterprise value, bringing electrical and optical connectivity technologies together.

Moving data is becoming as important as processing it. Marvell’s proposed acquisition of Lumentum puts that infrastructure challenge at the centre of a major technology deal.
What happened
Marvell signed a definitive agreement to acquire Lumentum in an all-stock transaction with an implied enterprise value of $115bn. Lumentum shareholders would receive 4.5 Marvell shares for each share they hold.
The combination brings Marvell’s semiconductor and interconnect capabilities together with Lumentum’s lasers and optical networking technology. The companies expect closing in the first half of 2028, subject to shareholder and regulatory approvals and other conditions.
Why it matters
Large AI systems need to move enormous volumes of data between processors and across facilities. More computing power can create more pressure on the connections between those machines.
Combining electrical and optical technologies could let the companies design more of that connection together, rather than treating each component as a separate engineering problem.
The bigger picture
For startups building optical chips, switches or interconnects, the deal is a significant competitive development. A broader supplier could offer customers more integrated systems, while specialist companies will need a clear reason to be chosen.
The immediate news is the agreement. Integration benefits, customer adoption and any improvement in efficiency will depend on approval, execution and the products that follow.
