MacPaw Brings On-Device AI to SetApp

On-device AI is becoming a distribution fight, not just a privacy feature.

What happened

MacPaw partnered with Liquid AI to power locally hosted AI models for its products and, eventually, for developers building through SetApp.

The plan includes an on-device inference system called Elix, local memory and AI credit-based plans. Instead of sending every request to cloud models, MacPaw wants more AI tasks to run directly on user devices.

That approach could matter for productivity apps, personal data tools and developer products where users care about privacy, latency and offline access.

Why it matters

Most consumer AI still depends heavily on cloud inference. That creates cost, privacy and performance trade-offs. Local models can reduce cloud dependency and keep more sensitive user context on the device.

The challenge is that consumer hardware has limits. On-device systems need to be fast, useful and developer-friendly without draining battery or feeling weaker than cloud-based tools.

The bigger picture

The AI stack is splitting between huge frontier models in the cloud and smaller, specialised models running closer to users.

If MacPaw can make on-device AI easy for developers inside SetApp, it could help turn local inference from a technical feature into an app-store-level platform advantage.
