Loft Orbital lands $1B AI satellite deal
Loft Orbital has signed a $1 billion contract to build a 50-satellite AI-enabled constellation for Marlan Space.

AI is moving further into orbit as satellite operators begin combining sensors with onboard compute rather than sending every raw observation back to Earth first.
What happened
Loft Orbital signed a $1 billion contract with UAE-based Marlan Space to build a constellation of 50 AI-enabled satellites. The system is expected to combine onboard computing with optical, radar and other sensors, with the first ten satellites already in production.
Why it matters
Processing more data in orbit can reduce latency and bandwidth requirements while allowing satellites to deliver useful outputs faster. That matters for applications where rapid interpretation is more valuable than simply collecting large volumes of imagery.
The bigger picture
Space infrastructure is becoming increasingly software-defined. Sovereign AI investment is also starting to overlap with sovereign satellite infrastructure as governments and strategic investors seek more control over both compute and observation systems.
