Kimi K3’s Momentum Turns Into a Reported $3.5B Round

Moonshot AI’s open-weight model release may now be turning into one of the largest AI financings outside the leading US labs.

What happened

Moonshot reportedly closed a $3.5 billion funding round at a $35 billion valuation. The company is behind Kimi K3, a large open-weight model released in July.

The reported raise exceeded Moonshot’s original fundraising target and could support additional compute spending, product development and a possible future listing in Hong Kong.

Why it matters

Open-weight models are free to download, run and modify, which can make it harder for their developers to capture value directly from model access. Moonshot’s financing suggests investors believe the company can convert Kimi’s reach into a broader business through products, developer adoption, services or distribution.

The size also illustrates how expensive frontier-model competition has become. Training is only part of the bill. Labs need servers for continued research, inference capacity for users and capital to keep pace with frequent model releases.

The bigger picture

Chinese AI labs are competing under tighter access to advanced chips than their US peers, but they are still attracting significant capital. Moonshot’s open-weight strategy may also help it build global relevance faster than a closed model limited to one application.
